Sabzewar Library Table

2025

Handmade porcelain tiled table inspired by the Shrine of Hazrat Shah Shamsuddin Sabzwari in India.

In most tiling the negative space is little more than a regrettable necessity, here it is the primary focus. Spaces between the three tile shapes create a complex geometric network of nonagons and implied hexagons.

First, I hand carved the tiles and then used to make a reference press-mold. Castings from this mold were then used to create several two-part slipcasting molds, including molds for the half tiles around the perimeter. The tiles were glazed with custom glazes I mixed for this project and then fired to Δ10 in an electric kiln.

Brass tubing loops around the perimeter of the tiles to provide an outer edge for the grout before it encounters the wood. Using a chemical blackening agent I darkened the brass into subtle shades of blue and green to blend harmoniously. Yellow iron-oxide pigment was added to the grout to grant it its emphasis.

Cherry is used for the frame with paduk accents in the corners. A custom dye-tinted oil based stain gives it color, though with age both woods should darken and express more violet undertones. Garnet shellac and paste wax form the clear-coat layer to ensure years of durability and easy repair.

Finally, the base is from my great grandmother-in-law’s Singer sewing machine. I carefully restored it from a few decades of outdoor storage with hours of wire brushing, turpentine, and a little bit of black paint. I preserved all the original hardware and used it to attach the top.

Relief Tile Portraits

2025

A series of carved relief tiles of people who have taught me and inspired my ceramic work.

Each subject received a tile made into an ornament as a thank you.

Tiles were hand carved then made into two-part slip casting molds. Examples here were painted with red-iron-oxide and cobalt-oxide wash and fired Δ10 soda. They were drilled with a masonry bit and a hanging cord was added so they could be used as ornaments. The best ones were given away, these are the rest.

Sad Little Men

2025

A self-portrait of depression in eleven tiles.

2025 was a challenging year. Depression came for me and I used it as an opportunity to capture some of my own emotions in tile. Each expresses a feeling from the cycles of my depressive journey.

I made them until I was done.

I wanted to explore tile as pure art, free from the expectation of covering a surface. Depression, like art, is useful, but it doesn't help you get things done.

Stoneware and porcelain slip were cast in layers to form the brown and white of the base tiles. Stick figure gesture carvings were used to highlight the body dynamics of the different emotions. The tiles were finished in a Δ6 soda firing.

Hickory was used to make the shadow box frame. The interior was airbrushed in matte black to give the tiles the sensation of floating in the void.

Robin Cookies

2025

For stolen cookies.

Made entirely from circular arcs, I drew and carved the Robin design, made it into a sprig mold, then attached the first casting to this wheel thrown cookie jar. The jar was fired Δ6 soda where it experienced enough reduction to give the interior a lovely pinkish speckle.

Some have argued it is too small to be a cookie jar; they probably have a cookie problem.

Goblets

2025

A Series of Goblets.

Slip cast in stoneware and porcelain, fired Δ10 soda.

Desert Fountain

2025

Southwestern states like my home, Colorado, are short on water. In this project I wanted to explore what it would mean to develop a fountain which didn't evaporate this precious resource. It is powered by the sun and uses glass marbles instead of water.

Glazed stoneware fired in Δ10 soda.

The top tier is a solar panel which connects to a motor in the base which carries up the marbles with a custom designed and 3d printed Archimedes screw assembly. The final top was 3d printed to accommodate the required tolerances.

Capture The Flag Base

2025

A capture the flag base with a digital score-keeping timer.

Designed and built for an 18 hour capture the flag game with a blue defending team and a red attacking team. If the flag is in the base the blue team counter increments; if it is out of the base the red team counter increments. Pressing the button lights up the two displays, one red and one blue, with the current score.

To conserve battery power the screens were only powered when the button was pressed; if held down the screens would display the current battery information. Internal micro-switches detect the presence (or absence) of the flag. The unit was turned on and off with a key-switch ensuring no tampering by players. The whole assembly was embedded in a concrete-filled partial barrel to support a 10 foot flag pole.

The base was given as a gift to the participants. Unsurprisingly, I failed to get many (any?) good pictures before it was gone.

Enchanted Forest Tea Set

2025

An enchanted tea set made for my daughter.

More pictures will hopefully appear someday. Unfortunately the unicorn teapot was damaged in firing.

Canslinger

2025

A raccoon with attitude, and guns.

Stoneware, wood-fired Δ10

Shaded Mini Deck

2024

A small cedar floating deck with hidden fasteners.

This deck was build off a bedroom and sized to the maximum allowed without a permit. Normally hidden fasteners are reserved for synthetic decking products, but I routed the side-grooves into the planks and it works wonderfully. It is stabilized on plastic boots set into gravel.

Finished with a coat of Armstrong Clark Oil-based Stain.

code.lawless

2022

code.lawless is a groundbreaking digital performance art piece which combined an unfolding story of an escape from the oppressive city of [REDACTED] told through text, videos, comic strips, chat, NFTs and games.

The project featured many innovations which are still unmatched in the blockchain space. All of the NFTs used are entirely built on-chain. The images are assembled on-chain from pixel data stored directly on-chain and wrapped in SVGs which are also, you can guess, built on-chain.

The first of the NFTs was a set of transponders which owners could set to broadcast a custom message. They update automatically and are all stored on chain.

The climax was a game which took the player on an adventure to break captured lawless out of a [REDACTED] prison and allowed them to mint unique lawless characters as NFTs.

Later additions included morphs which allowed you to apply interesting graphical effects, unique palettes, and altered forms to lawless NFTs.

Again everything is on chain, and will be for the lifetime of the Ethereum Network. Another innovation was the fact that all the contracts are themselves NFTs (including the contracts-as-nfts contract itself!)

MoonCatRescue

2017

The first generative digital blockchain collectible, predating the term NFT. It languished in relative obscurity until it was rediscovered during the NFT craze of 2021. This kicked off a whirlwind of innovation including a creator and marketplace for accessories which helped launched the careers of several other artists!

I had to move on, but the project lives on under new management at MoonCatRescue.com

From the original website:

We are undertaking an Insanely Cute Operation to the moon to save the MoonCats from imminent danger, and we need your help. Are you ready to help?

You may not know this, but there are currently over four billion MoonCats on the moon. Every MoonCat is unique in its own way. These lunar felines live in harmony – they are often found frolicking through craters, batting moon rocks around, and taking long space naps. However, the upcoming solar eclipse threatens their existence (for reasons), and it us up to us to ensure the MoonCat species lives on.

To save the MoonCats we are going to rescue them from the moon and bring them to live on the Ethereum blockchain, where they will be safe and live fulfilling MoonCat lives. We have designed a spaceship, with the latest in litterbox technology, that can fit up to 25,600 MoonCats. If you choose to come along, then it will be up to you to scan for and rescue MoonCats to the safety of the Ethereum blockchain!

ThrottleBall Mouse

2016

Inspired by the need for a better mouse, and one which could use the trackball as the scroll wheel, I designed and built a trackball from scratch.

The "umbrella" knob allows you to adjust the sensitivity of the trackball in real-time making it perfect for detailed design work.

Aspen Desk & Shelf

2013

The project was to design a unique and modern desk and shelf to fit a specific home-office space.

The desk features fully articulated monitor arm and keyboard tray as well as a "hidden" file drawer

One of the key design elements in the shelf is the 15:16 ratio of the grid. Working on the go board taught me that slight rectangles make for dramatically more pleasing squares.

Westernized Go Board

2012

A non-traditional board for the ancient game of go.

The board surface is maple plywood, the lines and dots are made of walnut inlays, and the border is oak plank.
